This is something I really would like to understand but. This "Promo 2002" is a three tracks release recorded in order to find a label for a forthcoming album where these three track will also find place. This band is continuing with spreading of black metal plague around. This drumming that I was already mentioning in reviews of previous ASTRAY's releases, is still amazes me! Fast and unique style. Vocals are also very fast, such as on previous releases but this time they are more various. ASTRAY has definitely found it's style of black metal music and with such a songs they really deserve a best label that world can give. If I would have a label, I wouldn't wait any second longer. ”Oulu Kajaani akselilta lähtöisin oleva promo on eksynyt selittämättömistä syistä käsiini analysoitavaksi, hmm. Olipahan alotus, jees. No nyt hieman ontuvasti hypätään Astrayn historiaan, jossa ilmeisesti on kaksi aiempaa demoa, promoa mitälie ilmestynyt ja ilmeisesti jäsenten määrä bändissä on pysynyt vakiona, eli kahtena. Tästä saakin aasinsillan kyhäiltyä musiikin puolelle, josta kyllä ilmenee, että soittimia on aikaisemminkin tullut vinguteltua. Promo siis sisältää kolme kappaletta jotka ovat varsin kuunneltavia, joten promo pyörähtelee veikeästi soittimessa silloin tällöin ihan vaan kun sitä on mukava kuunnella. Levyn äänimaisema on aika erikoinen. Se ei ole suttuista suhinaa vaaaaan se on aika erillainen, jokseenkin bassovoittoinen. Tähän voi olla syynä myös laulu, joka kuulostaa koneistetulta, mutta jos lauluun ei ole koneilla kajottu niin eipä voi muuta sanoa kun, että: "huh huh, onpa erikoinen ääni." Kaiken kaikkiaan laulu hoidetaan kuitenkin hyvällä tyylillä. Levyn viimeinen kappale tuo jotenkin Dimmun mieleen, eikä oikein hyvässä mielessä, mutta onneksi tästä turhasta Borgiristelusta päästään suht nopeasti eroon ja viimeinen ralli jääkin levyn parhaaksi kappaleeksi. Kaiken kaikkiaan Astray on melko valmista mälliä hevikansalle syötettäväksi, eikä puutteita tule juurikaan mieleen. Astray hyödyntää musiikissaan hyvin erillaisia yritelmiä ja musiikissa on myös ripaus persoonallisuutta. Promon suurin heikkous lienee kappaleiden rakenteessa. Kaikki kappaleet alkaa jonkinlaisella hölkkäämisellä, sitten rauhoitutaan, vedetään soolo ja jatketaan hölkää. Tähän voisi ehkä puuttua, eipä sitten muuta. Jos joku ei nyt tajunnut tästä yhtään mitään, niin sanotaan, että promo on huomattavasti parempi kuin tämä arvostelu.” (Toni Haapasaari)

”Kaksihenkinen Oululais/Kajjjaanilainen Astray on niitä bändejä, joista olen kuullut puskaradion laulavan paljon ja hyvällä nuotilla. Vuodesta 1998 asti kasassa ollut bändi on tähän astisella urallaan julkaissut kaksi MCD:tä. Ensimmäisen MCD:n (Until I'm Cold Enough) bändi julkaisi omarahoitteisesti keväällä 1999. Toiselle MCD:lle löytyi julkaisijaksi Beyond ...Prod. MCD "Alone" julkaistiin kesällä 2000. Jo saman vuoden lopulla Astray aloitti nauhoitukset rumpujen osalta ensimmäiselle täyspitkälleen. Tämän jälkeen bändi vietti studiotyöskentelyn saralla hiljaiseloa yli vuoden. Nyt kuitenkin on aktivoiduttu jatkamaan levyn keskeytyneitä äänityksiä. Tämä promo esitteleekin juuri tuolta valmisteilla olevalta levyltä 3 biisiä tarkoituksenaan kalastaa kelvollinen julkaisija levylle. Saatekirjeessään Astray lokeroi itsensä jo ennestään suhteellisen täyteen ahdettuun "surumielisen ja aggressiivisen" musiikin karsinaan. Jotenkin tuntuu, että noin joka toinen bändi on tänä päivänä samoilla linjoilla. Kilpailua tulee siis riittämään ja bändin tuleekin tarjota jotain todella erikoista erottuakseen massasta. Tuon sudenkuopan Markku ja Vesa ovat myös onnekseen havainneet. Musiikkiin on poimittu pala sieltä, toinen täältä, kuitenkaan sortumatta linjattomuuteen. Vokaaleista löytyy tyypillistä bläkkiskärinää ja tasapainottavana elementtinä on käytetty myös puhdasta vokalisointia. Välillä Vesa saa laulusuorituksiinsa todella ahdistuneen tunnelman ja toisena hetkenä taas mennään kultaista keskitietä vailla sen kummempaa tunteen paloa. Promolla kaikki instrumentit soittaa Markku. Ei voi kuin ihmetellä miehen multi-instrumentalistin kykyjä. Mikään soitin ei tunnu kiusallisen huonosti soitetulta vaan pikemminkin päinvastoin. Miehen kitarasta lähtee useita varsin hienoja sooloja. Myös akustista kitaraa on käytetty ennakkoluulottomasti, eikä olla juututtu pelkkään hevijunnaukseen. Aika ajoin riffittely tuo mieleen Panteran vastaavan, joskin nopeammin soitettuna. Rumputyöskentely on varmalla tasolla. Niin kiivas tulitus, kuin hieman rauhallisempikin soitto luonnistuu. Soittimista vähiten onnistuttu on koskettimien kanssa. Koskettimia on kyllä käytetty suhteellisen monipuolisesti. Välillä kompataan ja välillä soitetaan enemmänkin kuvioita. Valitettavasti lähes kaikki toteutetut ideat ovat vaan tuttuja jo ensimmäisten kosketinbläkkisbändien levyiltä. Kun joskus bändin miehistöä aletaan täydentämään, niin tästä kosketinvelhon paikasta olisi hyvä alkaa. Mutta.. Tärkeintähän kuitenkin on, että Astray kuulostaa nytkin oikealta bändiltä, eikä pelkästään yhden miehen jukeboxilta. Promon kärkibiisiksi laitettu Welcome To The Cult esittelee Astrayn parhaita puolia. Aggressiivinen ja herkkä soitanta on valettu helvetin hyväksi muotiksi. Alkupuolen kaahaus julistavine lauluineen vaihtuu sulavasti biisin loppupuolen tunnelmoivaan soittamiseen. Herkistelyn päälle tuleva kitarasoolo toimii siltana biisin uudelleen syttyvään raivoon. Paitsi että soolo itseisarvona on helvetin hyvän kuuloinen, se myös vie biisiä eteenpäin lisäten koko sovituksen intensiteettiä. Hienoa työtä! Toiseen biisiin Barbed Wire Paradise bändi on saanut koko promon depressiivisimmän tunnelman. Vesan laulu erinäisine vivahteineen saa synkeyden ja kurjuuden aivan käsin kosketeltavaan muotoon. Tämä biisi ei kyllä ole mitään best of -materiaalia, mutta täyspitkälle teemalevylle biisi olisi omiaan. Mieleeni tulee King Diamond synkeintä tuotantoa edustava Graveyard. Yhtä lohdunta ja vihaista tunnelmaa tässäkin biisissä loihditaan. Paketin viimeinen Biisi ei aukea rautakangellakaan. Heti alussa tuleva ja koko biisin matkalle viljelty pianointi tuo mieleen Dimmu Borgirin joskus viisi vuotta sitten. Ja kaiken lisäksi tuo pianorullaus ei ole erityisen tarttuvaa laatua. Tyylitaju on Markulta ilmeisesti hetkeksi kadonnut biisiä rustatessa. Kaiken kaikkiaan biisi on kovin tusinatavaran oloinen, vaikka lopun nopeammat kaahaukset pelastavatkin paljon. Loppuyhteenvetona Astrayn musiikki toimii monelta osin helvetin hyvin, mutta jotkut ideat ovat kyllä auttamatta moneen kertaan kuultua. Selvimpänä esimerkkinä juuri tuo koskettimien käyttö. Muut palaset kyllä toimivat kuten pitääkin. Varsinkin musiikkin sotketut useat elementit saavat Astrayn musiikin kuulostamaan omalta itseltään. Markulla ja Vesalla on selvästi näkemys minkälainen olisi täydellinen Astray levy. Pienellä hienosäädöllä ja bändin miehistön täydentämisellä ehkä löytyisi se viimeinen vaihde jolloin Astrayn tarjoama anti olisi jotain todella erityistä. Nytkin ollaan selvästi harmaan massan yläpuolella, mutta se viimeinen puristus vielä puuttuu.” (Jani Vuorela)

“Uh…(!?), Finnish ´atmospheric Dark Metal(!)´ act Astray isn´t that unknown band for many who are constantly aware of what’s going on Black/Dark Metal circles. For me, they were… up till now. The Astray, which contains only two musicians, Markku Paakkonen (all the instruments) and Vesa Moilanen (vocals) was formed in 1998 and the guys´ purpose was to create a band that could combine the 3 key elements into their music: sadness, hate, and depression. Having done two mini-CDs (a self-financed mini-CD titled “When I´m Cold Enough” in 1998 and “Alone”, released by Beyond Productions in 1999) , the band keep on improving and tightening their sound and in the unholy year of 2002 it was time for the guys again to enter the studio and record some promotional material mainly for labels. Nine songs were recorded at a small BRR studio and there of them were chosen for this advance 2002 promotional disc. The opening song, “Welcome to the Cult” is in my opinion based on the ´hate´ element musically. Most of the time aggressive guitar riffs dominate the song ´til the middle of the song where more atmospheric and symphonic parts start winning more space in the song structure and making it more interesting sounding than what I originally expected from it as a whole. It´s no wonder if some of their symphonic parts in this particular tune bring the Norwegian sympho-masters Arcturus to mind since Astray definitely possess the same musical areas as well. “Barbed Wire Paradise” as a song mostly gets its fuel from the ´depression´ element for sure. Again, those highly symphonic and atmospheric elements take the lead role and this is exactly the kind of stuff I´d like to hear more from them. Especially the keyboard parts are truly bombastic and beautiful. Vesa´s agonizing Black Metal shrieks add nicely some contrast to an overall depressive atmosphere the guys have managed to capture into this truly ´ice-cutting´ song. What a beautifully agonizingly amazing song indeed!! The last song on this 3-song promo, “Bleeding Wire” is more like an average Black Metal song, reminding me of some later Dimmu Borgir, - some Thy Serpent - and some Arcturus material. It, however, doesn´t grow in me the way “Barbed…” did, but it still has its mind-sticking moments – the song varying musically from some dead emotions to some truly aggressive and attacking vibes constantly. I bet many of you will respect this constant variation in Astray´s blackish Dark Metal, so in order to get convinced by my words of praise about them, go listen to some of their MP3’s that are available at: http://www.astrayband.com. There should be enough prove in their site for all of you ´bout Astray´s rising potential and talent to be noticed wider in the universum metallum.” Rating: 3,7/5 (Luxi Lahtinen)

“The core of Astray remains inspired by Emperor, but the Finnish duo varies the tempo and especially the vocal styles. The singer both sings and screams. There are many gothic forays, as well as emotional passages on the guitar. The latter, of course, is superior to the redundant keyboards. The three songs are generally fast, yet are unexpectedly often accompanied with slower drumming. The demo-CD is primarily meant as a promotional tool for the band's readied full-length for which the act is seeking a record label, as well as members. “Another example for the seemingly unending amount of good Metal bands from Finland is ASTRAY. Hailing from the high north of Oulu and Kajaani, the 3 track promo comes over rather non-descript, but as a promo it doesn't have to convince by looks, so… When I say that ASTRAY play Symphonic Black Metal, many will turn away with an annoyed look on their face "No, not another one!" But that would neither do them justice ("another one") nor would it let people see the quality of this band, because what these guys have on offer is good, really good! In fact it's three songs off their full length debut and it thankfully is not just another clone of CRADLE BORGIR or DIMMU OF FILTH, but tries and manages to bring in an own fresh touch. The opener "Welcome To The Cult" for example is an excellent mix of melodic Black Metal with quite some Heavy Metal riffage that fits quite nicely. Also the vocals are different, because they do not only bring us a rough Black Metal-growl/shriek (that at times is not far off Death Metal), but also some clear vocals and calmer breakdowns, great song! Unfortunately the following "Barbed Wire Paradise" is (to my ears) suffering from the far too harsh vocals that do not match the melodic and varied music at all, which again offers great shifts of speed, intensity and melodies, just like the closing "Bleeding Here", which again has these vocals, but offers even more variety up to piano accompanying the at times furious instrumentation. So musically this rough mix promo is more than promising, especially in the great opener "Welcome To The Cult", while the vocals on the other two tracks are too harsh for my taste, distracting too much from the very varied music. Still this is a band that we should keep an eye out for, with songs like these under the belt it should only be a matter of time until we see the name of ASTRAY on a regular label release.” (Alex) 7,5/10

“Astray from Finland sent us a three-track-promo (rough mix) with songs of their upcoming album, for which they haven’t found a label yet. Another thing is that Astray’s line-up isn’t completed yet. The band currently consists of only two persons. Markku Pääkkönen writes all the music, and Vesa Moilanen creates all the Sadness, hate and depression with his lyrics and vocals. This band is certainly interesting and somewhat weird. On one side they play Black Metal influenced music, with morbid and agonising vocals. On the other side they play slower, easier parts that even contain Pink Floyd influences! The three songs on this promo are very well-played (by just two people? Good job!) and it has to be said that Markku Pääkkönen is a very talented musician. He writes great songs, sometimes even a little experimental and filled with great solos. The three songs on this promo (‘welcome to the cult’, ‘barbed wire paradise’, and ‘bleeding here’) are of very high standard, the band has a nice website with a lot of information about the band and music (check their musical influences – I just knew it had to be a wide scale of things). Well, even without the musicians to complete this band... if I owned a record company I would sign these guys NOW and without ANY hesitation. Oh, and because this is a promo with only three songs on it I can’t think of a score for it, but the story above speaks for itself, don’t you agree?” (Peter B.)

"Im internationalen Underground gibt’s immer wieder neue und interessante Bands zu entdecken, so auch die Finnen, die wie SENTENCED aus dem malerischen Oulu kommen. Mit ihren Landsleuten haben sie aber nichts gemeinsam, ASTRAY zocken eher einen Mix aus Power und Black Metal und erinnern mich an einen Sprößling von CHILDREN OF BODOM und DISPATCHED. Melodien und keifender Gesang werden zu einem kräftigen Kompaktling verschmolzen, der in Verbindung mit einem fetten Sound (die Bassdrum ballert beim Opener „Welcome To The Cult“ alles nieder) gut knallt. Die Songs an sich sind mittelschnell bis schleppend („Barbed With Paradise“, das im Mittelteil mit Bombast Black Metal-Keys a la SCHEITAN aufgepeppt wird), wobei es bei „Bleeding Here“ auch mal flotter sein darf. Letzter Song ist Abschluss und Highlight der Minischeibe, die einen Vorgeschmack auf ein komplettes Album bieten soll und ist im Keyboard-Bereich stark von OBTAINED ENSLAVEMENT (zur „Soulblight“) beeinflusst. Dazu gibt’s aber immer wieder Melodien und Power Metal-Riffs. Ich bin grad in Geberlaune und verteile eine wacklige 11. ”Finnish ASTRAY age as a band about 4 years old. They have released 2 mini-CDs ["Until I'm Cold Enough" (self-financed) and "Alone" (Beyond… Prod.)] and have already finished their untitled debut album, which has 9 compositions. This is a 3-track promo, showing the capabilities of the band and which is mostly intended for record labels and the press. The 3 tracks ("Welcome To The Cult", "Barbed Wire Paradise" and "Bleeding Here") are a mix of melodic black metal, mostly, (DIMMU BORGIR, ARCTURUS, OLD MAN'S CHILD) with Swedish death metal, less (DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED). ASTRAY seem to be following a good path with the compositions being well-performed and pleasant to the ear. The thing is that I don't think they have something new to give to the black metal scene. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't be given a chance to prove themselves. ”Apokalyptistä black metallia, kaoottista ja psykoottista mutta paikoitellen jopa hyvin kaunista. The Kovenant, Cradle Of Filth ja Throes Of Dawn voisivat olla sellaisia suuntaa antavia esimerkkejä Astrayn musiikista. Mahtipontisia kosketinmattoja, akustisia kitaroita, kaoottista mättöä ja julistavaa huutoa. Ainekset ovat monipuoliset ja soittajatkin osaavat hommansa vallan mainiosti. örinälaulu tosin rupesi hieman puuduttamaan näiden kolmen biisin aikana ja siksi olisinkin toivonut että puhtaita vokaaleita olisi käytetty enemmän, varsinkin kun ne toimivat niin hyvin Welcome to the Cultissa. Kaiken kaikkiaan Astray nousee materiaalillaan kuitenkin vahvasti keskitason yläpuolelle.”

“It's quite sad a band like Astray doesn't manage to find a proper label, cause their music is a lot better than most of the official released reviewed here in the magazine. They play a rather original music, mostly out of the combination they make between fast and aggressive consistent Black Metal parts and some more musical Gothic/Heavy ones, with good quality singed voice, all with a consistent dose of atmosphere. Though surprising, this combination results in a rather unitary music, with a natural evolution and without any unpleasing breaks. ” For first really great compliments to the Astray that with this album (their third work also if only a promo) reach really high levels of technique and sound. If with "Alone" their last album before this, we saw a baddest musically vein than into the first work "Until I’m Cold Enough", with this last the Astray pass by they selves and with these three songs, most of all "Bleeding Here", they spread an incredible violence who's took here and there by keyboards perfectly played and compositions well arranged. So the band seems in some passages nearer to metal progressive than to the pure black metal. The three compositions included into the Promo are one by one more intriguing and I think that now it's possible to say that the Astray have developed their own style completely different from the other black metal groups here in Europe, I mean. Greatings to the band. I'm keep in waiting to find these great songs published by some label.” (Roberto) ”Anzitutto i più sentiti complimenti agli Astray che con quest'album, il loro terzo lavoro pur se si tratta per il momento solo di un Promo, raggiungono livelli tecnici incredibilmente alti ed una qualità del suono curatissima. Se gia in Alone, il precedente album della band, si iniziava a scorgere una vena più cattiva musicalmente che nel suo predecessore Until I'm Cold Enough, qui gli Astray hanno superato se stessi ed in questi tre brani, ma sopratutto tra i tre in Bleeding Here, raggiungono una violenza incredibile che è accompagnata qua e la da tastiere suonate perfettamente e composizioni e arrangiamenti ottimi. La band così si avvicina in certi passaggi ad un sound quasi progressive metal più che black metal. I tre brani che compongono il Promo sono uno più accattivante dell'altro e penso che ora come ora si possa dire che gli Astray hanno uno stile tutto loro non accostabile, qui in Europa credo, a nessun'altra black metal band. Le più sentite congratulazioni quindi all'intera band. Ora sono ansioso di poter vedere pubblicati da qualche label questi brani davvero grandiosi. “Oh, didn’t they quit with music? Well, it’s good they didn’t. You know, there’re many bands in this goddamn world. Too many bands which I wish of having an encounter with: just to face ‘em and make ‘em stop composing / performing anything and anywhere. Just to make ‘em stop… and never make any attempts to continue what had once been started. Fortunately, Finland’s ASTRAY do not fit this criteria. This combo deliver highly exciting atmospheric / sympho-black with plenty room for more or less stunning leads. Without which they would be just another sympho-black metal act (well, didn’t you want me to be honest?). Everything’s been done fine. There’s nothing to cavil at in terms of musicianship, or sound execution, or the way these three songs have been conceived. Well, almost nothing. “Wieder einmal schallt es düster aus dem Land der tausend Seen herüber... diesmal jedoch sind es der Urheber lediglich zwei, die dazu nicht gerade auf leisen Sohlen den Weg auch in südlichere Gefilde antreten. Während sich Mastermind Markku Pääkkönen sämtlicher (!) Instrumentierung angenommen hat und damit zu keiner Zeit überfordert wirkt, ergießt Vesa Moilanen sein schmerzverzerrtes Kreischorgan über den sinistren Sud, der nach allen Regeln der Kunst der fin(n)ster-melancholischen Seite der Nordlichter huldigt. Eine winterliche Dark Metal-Offensive abseits der finnischen Gothic-Dukatenmulis, der ein harter Harschschnee aus vereisten Gitarren zugrunde liegt. Hie und da heben sich dunkle Wurzeln aus Bass und Drums von der frostigen Masse ab und auch etliche phantasievolle Gitarrensoli bieten farbige Auflockerungen, die auch der Neuschnee aus unaufdringlichen Synthies nicht bedecken will. Überhaupt ist die Keyboardarbeit nahezu stets präsent, hin und wieder melodieführend, jedoch niemals plakativ oder aggressionsschwächend. Nicht selten blinzeln Assoziationen zu THYRFING aus der Kälte; die stärkste Kraft jedoch liegt einmal mehr in der Ruhe, in der besonnenen Stille fallender Flocken, auf die gerade in „Welcome To The Cult“ der Blick von Synthies und hier auch (sehr stark!) des cleanen Gesangs schweift und die Kälte per Gänsehaut vermittelt. Angesichts dessen, dass diese komplett eigenproduzierte Promo nur eine Kostprobe des bereits in den Startlöchern harrenden Full Length-Debüts darstellt und auch der Produzentenschmiede unvollendet entrissen wurde, entfaltet dieser schon satt schallende Appetizer seine beabsichtigte Wirkung bei mir voll und ganz und umhüllt mich für immerhin 17 Minuten mit seinem schneidenden Hauch. Schon für diese Leistung des finnischen Zweigestirns würden 8/10 Zapfen aus den schneebebürdeten Tannen fallen, schlösse man von ihr auf das komplette zu erwartende Album. ”After two mini-CDs, Oulu´s Astray put out this three-track promo disc. I have to admit that I haven´t heard earlier material. These 3 pieces are just rough mixes shown from the album the band are working on. Needless to mention, Astray are looking for a record label. Astray is about sadness, hate and depression. Well, they come from Oulu, Finland, after all. Astray create dark and aggressive metal. Part dark, part death, even some black metal influences. The music varies from aggressive to more atmospheric parts. Not any tear spilling parts for sure, more majestic feelings. One thing, that is plus, is quite individual touch making their music, at least track 1 and 2, for some extenct. One influence might be Hypocrisy and their more aggressive songs. Thrash metal is other. This isn´t any old Kreator worship, but newer thrash. Then Finnish dark metallers Darkwoods My Betrothed is one reference point. First track is a definite highlight. It is memorable, heavy and all. Second one reminds me of Morgul´s newer stuff (a bit uninteresting, in other words), but that angelic choir and organ part in the middle is just where it should be. And those agonized vocals and solo after them. Yes! We are going in deep waters here... Third one starts with "Dimmu-piano" and sems to have something with in common with newer Old Man´s Child, for the first half. Then comes soloing part. Astray seem to really make them memorable, not just soloing, but as they should be. Guys handle their instruments for sure. I´m quite delighted of faster double kick drum parts. Vocals are mostly black metal high-pitched black metal shriek, but growling and clean singing can be heard. Generally the songs get more uninteresting from the beginning. I mean track 1 is great, track 2 is okay, track 3 is, well, its solo part is okay (same goes with the song titles, somehow)... After all, first impressions mean a lot for a record label bosses.” (Lane)

“Astray has found the perfect way to combine the agression of styles like black metal and death metal with many melodies and arrangements. Their music brings to my mind some shades of bands like for example Primordial, that is bands that have a lot of power and aggression in their music but that at the same time they have the melodic arrangements that give a lot of quality to the songs. Here we have a great keyboard player that adds a lot of melodies and feelings to Astray´s songs giving a lot of identity to the band while the guitarists spit their riffs with total rage. The vocals are screaming ones in total black metal fashion and are fundamental to the aggressive sound of Astray´s music. “Mit den 3 Tracks auf diesem Scheibchen wollen die Finnen von Astray ein bisschen Werbung für ihr in Arbeit befindliches Album machen, für das sie noch ein Label suchen. Wie schon bei der 2000 erschienenen MCD "Alone" beschäftigen sich die Skandinavier mit einer eher aggressiven Form des Dark Metals, ohne aber auch schöne Momente düsterer Musik nicht zu vernachlässigen. So wird z.B. auf der einen Seite ein keifender Gesang durch kräftigerer Gitarrenlinien unterstützt, auf der anderen schwelgt man in leicht hymnischen Passagen mit cleanerem Gesang durch sanftere Dunkel-Metallwelten. Insgesamt überwiegt aber etwas der aggressivere harrsche Ton auf der CD. Melodien kommen mal wieder auch nicht zu kurz, sind aber wiederum eher so angelegt, dass man sich die Tracks mehrmals anhören muß, um sie zu erfassen. A band from Finland playing a mix of black metal and thrash metal with a very good sound and good songs. The promo features three songs only but they are all three very good. Of course minor improvements can be made but the basics are there and they display musical skills and songwriting abilities that allow us to be confident that they will eventually sign a contract and release good albums in the future. The music is aggressive and the songs are well structured. I enjoyed the guitars while they also have a good vocalist, something rare in our days. His vocals are aggressive enough but he also has a personal style that I like. Fans of black metal will find a lot to like in this band and we consider the demo to be among the top underground releases we have heard so far. We expect to hear more from them in the future. ”Oululainen Astray on varsin omalaatuinen yhdistelmä aggressiota ja tunnelmaa, joka ei tyylipuhtaasti putoa tunnettuihin metallilokeroihin. Bändillä on jo takanaan pari MCD:tä, joten luonnollinen askel on tietysti kokopitkä albumi. Tämä kolmen biisin promo esittelee tuota tavaraa ja lopputulos on omalaatuinen. Tyyli on kuin sekoitus tunnelmallista ja melodista metallia, johon on otettu erinäisiä elementtejä black metallista sen äärireunoilta. Välillä kitarat valuttavat ulos tuopillisen melankoliaa ja haikeutta kun taas vokaalipuoli tykittää piipun täydeltä vihaisia ja melko äärimmäisiäkin black metal -tyylisiä vokaaleita. Koskettimen tyylistä tulee mieleen lähinnä Dimmu Borgir ja muut vastaavat kosketinvoittoiset BM-bändit, mutta kokonaisuutena Astray ei em. tyyliä liiemmin muistuta. Pääosin vokaalit ovat hyvin aggressiivisia, efekteillä täydennettyjä rääkymisiä ja onnistuneita sinällään, mutta onpa mukaan päätynyt myös hieman puhtaita lauluja, jotka nekin toimivat hyvin. Soundipuoli on muuten hyvä, mutta ajottainen suttuisuus vaivaa. Tosin tämä on osittain selitettävissä biisien raakamiksauksella eivätkä soundit huonot ole näinkään. Astray on lupausta täynnä, vaikkaan tämä ei ehkä ihan minun teekuppiani olekaan. Jos koskettimilla täydennetty melodisvivahteinen metalli nappaa, kannattaa tämä bändi pitää mielessä.” 3,5/5 (Serpent)

”Kylmäkiskoisesti nimetty Promo 2002 on Astrayn kolmas äänitetty materiaalikokonaisuus. Takana ovat kaksi mini cd:tä: 1999 äänitetty omakustanne MCD Until I'm cold enough sekä 2000 purkitettu Alone. Tällä kertaa paskan jauhamisen alaisena oleva Promo 2002 on pääasiallisesti tarkoitettu promootiotarkoituksiin mainosvoimille kunnollisen levytyssopimuksen kalastamiseen edellisen diilin päätyttyä Beyond...Prod:n kanssa. Promo 2002 käsittää kolme biisiä, jotka edustavat Astrayn uusinta materiaalia, jota itse asiassa on jo valmiina kokonaisen pitkäsoiton verran odottelemassa painattamistaan (noin 50 minuuttia). Bändi kertoo infolappusessaan, kuinka entinen levy-yhtiö Beyond...Prod oli ehdottanut heille albumin tekemistä jo heti heidät signattuaan, mutta bändi päätyi MCD:n työstämiseen, koska katsoi, ettei ollut vielä täysin valmis pitkäsoittoon. MCD:n valmistumisen jälkeen Astray koki kuitenkin valitettavan radikaalisia muutoksia, jotka tuskin pahemmin auttoivat bändin valmiutta uuden albumin työstämiseen. Nykyinen miehistö koostuu ainoastaan kahdesta henkilöstä, joiden voimalla pitkäsoitto on raavittu kasaan, josta Promo 2002 tarjoilee siis kolme kipaletta; tosin paria "vierailevaa tähteä" materiaalissa on käytetty, esimerkiksi levyn ensimmäisessä raidassa kuultavat parit puhtaat vokaalit ovat Juha-Pekka Leppäluodon taidonnäytteitä. Musiikillisesti Astraystä on aina jotenkin jäänyt sellainen "köyhän miehen Dimmu Borgir" -tavaramerkki. Esimerkiksi herrojen debyytti MCD:n liian tutut Dimmu Borgirmaiset kosketinilakoinnit ja jossain määrin suoranaiset plagioinnit väljähdyttivät bändin omaa uniikkia osaamista, joka ei vielä ollut ehtinyt puhjeta täyteen kukkaan myös siitä seuraavalla julkaisullakaan. Eikä olekaan täysin itsensä pettämistä sanoa, että kaksi vuotta treeniä on selvästikin tehnyt bändille vain plussaa; jonka esimerkiksi huomaa siitä, että otteet ovat niin sanotusti aikuistuneet ja bändistä erottaa jo oman tyyliin. Orkesteri on myös ymmärtänyt ottaa hyötykäyttöön bändin kantavat voimavarat, josta kielii esimerkiksi Vesa Moilasen jo aiemmillakin tuotoksilla säväyttänyt omalaatuinen vokalisointi, joka promo materiaalissa hakee jo vertaistaan. Siitä kuitenkin myöhemmin lisää. Soundipuolellisesti Promo 2002 -levylle on pistetty niin sanotut "rough mix" -versiot biiseistä, ja tämän mielestäni huomaa ehkä liiankin hyvin - korostan kuitenkin, etten tarkoita mitään ala '90-luvun alku aikaisia norjalaisessa vuoren (perä)reiässä nauhoitettua true-suhinaa. Ensinnäkin kitarasahaus kuulostaa aikamoisen laahaavalta ja epäselvältä, ja hyvä onkin, että kitaramelodioista toisinaan saa kunnolla selvää. Toinen tyly piirre levyssä on basson esilletuonti: basso lähinnä "murisee" kaiken muun ronskiuden päällä, ja kun päälle lyödään vielä Moilasen väkivaltaiset, black metal -sävytteiset huutamiset, niin tarve on suuri ruveta tavaamaan poikien lyriikkaa. Astrayn uusi materiaali kuulostaakin yllättävän ilkeältä, kiukkuiselta, repivältä, synkältä mutta toisaalta taas tunnelmallisimmillaan niin jääkylmän autuaalta. Koskettimien esiintuonti on lähinnä erilaisten kosketinmattojen rakentamista Alghazanthin Thy aeons envenomed sanity -ilmapiiriin mukaisesti, ja verrattaessa aiempiin tuotoksiin, mielestäni koskettimia käytetään vähemmän. Kitaroiden heavy metal -painotteinen sahaaminen on aika perustavaraa, toisin kuin soolot, jotka ovat upotettu tunnelmallisten fiilistelyjen mukaan; esimerkiksi ensimmäisen raidan väliin sovitettu, reippaasti yli minuutin paremmalla puolelle yltävä tarkkaan mietitty soolo-osuus nostaa kunnioitusta bändiä kohtaan omalta osaltani. Bändi tarjoilee myös biisien mukana hiukan akustista kitaraa, puhtaita vokaaleja ja tuttua omalaatuisuutta ("Bleeding here" loppuosa). Promo 2002 ehdottomaksi ritariässäksi nousee avausraita "Welcome to the cult", joka säilyttää ryhtinsä raidan loppuun asti mukaansa tempaavilla melodioilla. "Barbed wire paradise" on taas hiukan liian lattea biisi, joka sortuu liikaa itsensä toistamiseen, eikä biisiä pelasta edes tällä kertaa soolo-osuudet. Viimeinen raita "Bleeding here" on taas hiukan parempi yritys bändiltä: jo alusta asti mahtipontisesti starttaava biisi johdattelee kuuntelijan biisin lopussa räjähtävää kliimaksikohtaan, jossa Moilanen vetäisee ehkäpä levyn nopeimmat artikulointi osuutensa. ”Well,well,well. Finally my ears heard something unusual! Thanks for Finland band Astray!! Astray says that they play dark metal-NO! I can say that this is very technical, melodic black metal included some clean vocals. My ears very long time didnt hear anything like this. Astray is very young band. They started to play in 1998 when Markku and Vesa decided to bang their heads together. They released two MCD's : UNTIL I'M COLD ENOUGH and ALONE. After two MCD releases the band thought that Astray would be ready to start working for their debut full-lenght album. Studio recording were started in late 2000 by recording drums. It took a long time because band members had personal busies - studies. Finally the recording were continued and album was again making progress. Now band are promoting their new material with three songs, and looking for a good record label to release their album. So lets pray that it happend sooner and our ears could hear full Astray album!!
